Black American is generally considered an ethnicity (more or less). A lot of indigenous Americans south of us are not known to be the tallest of people, especially those from the more mountainous regions.

American is a nationality. Said nationality has within it numerous ethnicities many of which have overlapping traditions and cultures, but it does not have a singular overriding culture that supplants.
